On the 6th day of Christmas, FFF shared with me….Ambassador news from Malawi

In 2016, 154 patients were brought to the Fistula Care Centre in Malawi by an ambassador. These 154 were half of all patients brought to the centre. There were 28 ambassadors trained throughout the year to continue to assist these women.

Participants discussed that individuals living in rural areas were hesitant to travel somewhere they had never been due to fear and lack of transportation. Therefore, ambassadors served as escorts to overcome these barriers.

Due to the success, the program will continue and expand. Although we can measure the impact the ambassadors are making to increase access of treatment to women in Malawi, it is difficult to measure the impact they have in preventing fistulas from occurring through raising awareness. It is also difficult to measure the decrease of stigmatization of women with fistulas through the ambassadors, but we hope this is occurring simultaneously.

In 2017 we trained 44 patient ambassadors and patients have brought almost 200 patients to the centre so far this year which shows the expansion of the program in one year.

The ambassadors have put the bicycles to good use to travel farther distances when collecting patients.
